Movie Review : Tulpan

It’s been a long while since I had the luxury of a relaxed weekend to sit back and catchup on a film, I have alot of them waiting to be digested especially asian films . This latest one I watched is directed by a Kazakh film maker. A dramatic documentary of a sheep and goat herding family surviving and thriving in the harsh landscape of Kazakhstan. Asa (pictured),has come to live with his beautiful sister Samal, and her gruff husband, the herdsman Ondas, and their children.Asa is desperate to establish himself in the sort of life that Ondas and Samal have, he wants to marry Tulpan, the daughter of a neighbouring family but she won’t have anything to do with him.
What is most memorable to me about him , is our similar dreams to built a home out in the desert for the family. I would not consider living in the desert, but my dream home as got to do with the sand as well =D
Dreams and wishlists aside, the brilliant aspect of the film is it’s christian theme,Some of the lyrics of the original soundtrack came from Psalm 137 of The Bible – “River of Babylon” by Boney M a hit back in 1978. Asa also a shepherd who eventually finds his lost sheep.
This one deserves 5 stars and shall become one of my top film recommendations.

非诚勿扰 – If you are the one
I <3 Asian films very much and this is the best chinese one I’ve watched so far as well as the first one in 2009.
- Brilliant & Witty Dialogs
- Gorgeous Girls ( Shu qi!)
- Superb Scenic Settings ( Second half shot on location in Hoikado)
Definite must watch when it opens in singapore. I suppose it should be in cinemas by valentines 14th feb. It is a good film for non-married couples and lonely singles as well. This film explores the full range of emotions from happy,sad,bitterness,laughter,anger,jealousy..etc even includes a confession to God
I shall not divulge more, watch it with me I guarranty you a good time =) If you are the one

My Two-Faced Girlfriend aka Hello Ani!
Yes Mr God I know you are speaking.. sometimes I think I’m crazy for reading into stuff too deep, Not sure what you are telling me thru this show , but I’ll note down the parallels for future reference.

“Gu-Chang doesn’t have job, money and he haven’t had any girl friends before. He is a total loser. One day his life is totally changed. At least that’s what he thought. He met this cute, naive and dreamy girl named Ani. She is perfect for him. Except the fact that she has multiple personality disorder. Ani has one more person within her, Hani. Hani is tough, violent and a scary girl. Gu-Chang doesn’t want to meet Hani but he only wants to see Ani. Where are you, Ani? “
- Main character Gu-Chang is mucking and bumming in college choosing not to graduate
- He meets this beautiful girl on a train sitting opposite each other , he was scared out of this pants by the her ghastly first impression
- Hani , the dominant other side of ani , is tough and unwavering , though she still exudes a softer side by allowing Guchang to call out(awake up) ani.
- Ani asks Gu Chang to be her lighthouse on the beach ( this portion of the script is totally irrelevant to the movie I suppose it alludes to the boss) requesting him to stand further and further towards the shoreline and then she disappears.
- Hani is finally cured of her multiple personality disorder , but ani is lost in the process
- GuChang stalks her the park where she frequently jogs
- GuChang tries to run away when Hani caught him stalking her, both of them sit down and Guchang recall to her of their past dating years
- Guchang tells Hani of the secrets Ani told him, like how when she misses her other half, birds will start chirping in her ears

If only I can get the supposed person to watch it with me, maybe the pieces of the jigsaw somehow might just fit together
Well everyone’s a skeptic , including myself , but still it’s a hilarious film to waste ur time on

Seoul Soul
Quite some time has past since my last post , what have I’ been up to lately?
I’m immersed in Asian cinema , korean films in general. Here are some flicks in particular that I highly recommend. Mostly within the genre of light hearted romantic comedy, except the last one , which is quite philosophical and very richly layered. Narrated using Korean History as a satirical parody to modern day society.

Keeth Recommends [Himitsu]
Yojiro Takita directs this witty, understated comedy about the clash between generations and the different facets of love. Naoko (Kayako Kishimoto) and her 17-year-old daughter Monami are hospitalized after their bus plunges off the edge of a cliff. Just as Naoko is about to die, she manages to transfer her soul to her daughter’s body so as not to be separated from her husband Heisuke (Kaoru Kobayashi). Once he catches on, the family structure more or less remains in tact: Heisuke still has a wife to talk to and Monami (inhabited by Naoko) still goes to school. Of course, sex becomes a ticklish issue. At one point in the film, Heisuke gently rebuffs his tipsy wife/daughter when she asks him to make love to her, while “Naoko” grows jealous when a young pretty teacher (Yuriko Ishida) flirts with her husband. Later, “Naoko” realizes that as her daughter, she has the opportunity to attain the goals she never could. Much to Heisuke’s chagrin, Naoko studies for the college entrance exams with freakish intensity and manages to get into a top university. About the same time, “Naoko” realizes after reading a book on the matter that her grip on her daughter’s body will soon weaken. One day, Monami awakens with no memory of her life while inhabited by her mother, though she feels somehow enriched by the experience. Japanese pop phenom Ryoko Hirosue delivers an astonishing performance as both Monami and as Naoko’s spirit
A tear-jerking movie even for a guy like me , I guess I like Heisuke so much that I can identify with him.
Fun-loving, funny, quiet , strong , dependable, family-centric, loyal. This film explores numerous asian values – Fidelity , Family over self, humbleness of opinionated wife to submit to husband, Husband being the pillar of the family.
As I looked at my own life, I could have married my Naoko. I was that close , but I guess God now has other plans for me.

Alexander
Alexander the Great was a lousy 3 hour long homo movie, which should be renamed Alexander the Gay
I’ always thought oliver stone was a good director, now I think he is gay too. This movie earns a rating of -5 out of 5 stars. Totally not watchable.I find Indian(persian?) breasts and gay butts especially distasteful. Yuck….
